More on Gamel
and his partners in crime

Mo' Dawg sez,

Wild that Gamel beats Haniger by a level.

I am big on Gamel as I think he ups his HR totals as he learns to poach pitches,  But Haniger is the likely beter bet, in my mind, anyway.

But if I did the math correctly, Gamel's rookie season was better than 95% of historical rookie seasons.

.

Don't know if it adds up to 95% ... hmmm.  There were 15,907 rookie seasons, some of which were by the same person.  James wittily pointed out that Carson Kelly of the White Sox had one of the seasons in 2016, had another such season this year, and will have yet another one if he plays at all next year.  Which underlines Moe's point.  :- )

At Level Three there occurred 2,103 seasons, so 2103/15907 = 10.78%, still quite a remarkable number.  Well, it's quite a remarkable number for Jesus Montero or Justin Smoak.  I think the M's benefitted from Dipoto's "young and athletic" paradigm which is going to naturally score better in James' system -- Smoak may be a 1B and Gamel a RF, but hey, that makes a ball game.  If 24-year-old right fielders have better projections than 24-year-old pitch stalkers with the shoes on the wrong feet, that's nature.

....

There are two things I love about Ben Gamel, despite the fact that he BABIP'ed his way into a "mere" 100 OPS+:  First of all, his launch angle.  I don't even think HE HIMSELF has decided whether he's going to try to hit for power, and if so, for how much.  There were times when it looked like he had about 1.5x Seth Smith's natural ability to reach the RF seats -- sort of a Kyle Seager-esque ability to get aggravated with a ball and LAAASSHHHHHH it into the seats.

Or not.

....

It was also a constant source of wonder, --- > the MARINERS' view of Ben Gamel.  Slump or not, whatever was going on, they flat-out wanted the kid out there.

I don't say you're looking at a future All-Star but hey, for the money he's making, 2.5 WAR or so a year is a big part of an assault on Mt. Olympus.  I'd be focusing my irritations on other things, were I the Mariners.

TOPPING HANIGER

It's not clear to me why Haniger placed below Gamel in James' system - maybe it was the fact that Haniger is about a year-and-a-half older, and the things that are "special" about Haniger maybe don't translate so well to a formula.

:: shrug :: makes no never mind to me.  I see Haniger as a second draw at Jason Heyward, loosely speaking.
