Question:  When was the last time anybody in the ML's threw back-to-back shutouts and gave up 6 hits or less, combined? Answer:  I don't have the foggiest! Likely:  It's been a long while! Statement:  What Mike Montgoeery has just done is pretty special in the history (well, since 1990) of MLB ball. Statement #2:  KC had an idea when they took him as #36 in '08.   Cheech and Chong mention:  Remember the line, "They call me old Cucumber Head," from Los Cochinos?  Kewl as a cucumber, that's our Monty. Statement #2:  And you still think Zunino should be in AAA?  And I'm not talking about... Read More

. Q.  Pretty cool to have an SSI accomplice on the postgame shtick, right? A.  Wish it would happen every time.  'specially when it's MoeDawg. . Q.  Do we care that it was a "shutout"?  Like, as opposed to 8 IP, 1 ER? A.  There's a definite tendency for outlier rookie performances to point toward --- > above-average success from there. . Q.  The statline was 9  1  0  0  4  7.  Did he throw as well as the numbers suggest? A.  He did not, no. But that's pretty cool.  He brought his "B" game -- without a doubt it was his "B" game -- and the inherent nature of his game, even shabbily executed... Read More

Hailing from the Safeco Field, the Seattle Mariners have been in operation since 1977 when they were enfranchised into the Western Division of Major League Baseball. Currently the team is managed by Lloyd McClendon. The Mariners’ mascot is the loveable, thick eyebrow-tufted Mariner Moose. As of the 2014, the team has a losing record of 26 out of 38 seasons. Nicknamed “The Ms,” the Mariners’ team colors are silver, Navy blue and Northwest silver, but they will soon be changing to royal blue and gold. The Mariners’ name reflects the importance of marine life and culture in the Northwest region... Read More

. Dr. Grumpy sez, I have to admit I was a little let down by Wilson playing hardball with the team.  However, we don't know what he wants to do with all that extra money.  Maybe he wants part of his legacy to be a large foundation or generous charitable giving.  It seems grotesque to us but he only has one or two chances to get paid his market value.  The salary cap will go up.  No doubt it makes it harder to put out a complete team though. OTOH, he's been underestimated and undervalued pre-NFL and maybe even up till now.  Maybe he feels he wants to be fairly valued?  Cam Newton is making... Read More

Here's the quote from a Brock and Salk segment discussing whether or not it is fair to blame Jack Zduriencik for the offensive failures of this team: (Context) The point is being discussed that so many players are hitting well below their career averages. "I'm not sure I can blame Jack Zduriencik for all of those things," Salk said. "I can't blame him because Robbie Cano is hitting that far below his career average. There is an element that is on a player or on the manager to get something out of that player where he's got to find a way to hit at his career average. It's not entirely up to a... Read More

. Grizzle tapes on the tinfoil for this morning's festivities: I'm with you, Matt. But it runs far deeper than just the guys calling the shots with respect to player development. There was, to my recollection, a fairly complete turnover of those folks that came in the seasons after Jack was hired, with no real improvement. The minors are churning out pitchers, but then the M's minors have been pretty good at that for quite a while. I would clean house in the organization, top to bottom. . Sunday afternoon, some left hand sidearm b'wana was throwing bullets for the Angels.  Lloyd, properly, set the Mariners up to punish said lefty by deploying Franklin Gutierrez and Nelson Cruz to counter.   In some inning or other -- if you tell me you care, you can have the keys to the taco stand -- Guti and Cruz launched a pair of consecutive heat-seeking missiles, sandwiched around a $25M walk.  Felix was ahead in the game 1-0, AND runners at the corners, 1 out.  Croissant and marmalade.  mmmmmmm Felix and a lead.  No way to botch this one. Reuben Fine was a truly great chess grandmaster, and he was American, which is kind of like saying that the U.S. Soccer team had an artist like Lionel Messi or Mesut Ozil.  Doesn't happen in North America.  Anyway, the distinctive element in Fine's chess style was "precision."  His mistake rate was impossibly low; they say that playing against him was like trying to win Ping-Pong against a playback with the table folded up.  That was the feeling they described. . 'twas an article that Bill James wrote, back in the early days, like 1985 I think it was.  He ran a billion computer sims of old-timey HOF'ers.  His interest was, "What are the outer bounds of what could be possible, given random chance?"  So he'd run a season's worth of Mays performance, and run another one .... you know, in season #247 there would be a 7-hit game.  In season #512 there would be a 201-RBI performance.  Or whatever. FILTHY McNASTY AWARD The Astros enjoyed the first pitch of the game; the Mariners enjoyed the other 251 pitches.  It took Elias and Zunino that one pitch to figure out a thing that you'd think was rather important: that the young, gifted Astros are GREEDY.  They lust for First Pitch Fastball Home Runs.  This epiphany had not occurred during any of the previous Mariner-Astro contests, but when a First Pitch Fastball Home Run had been the entirety of the game, reality dawned on the Mariners. Mike Montgomery responded with a celery-crisp changeup to Joaquin Arias, inside, off the plate.  Arias KBIZLT'd a perfect fungo to Dustin Ackley, and it took a Major League effort to even put that pitch into play, fair territory.  But it was into play, fair, only as a clinical double play grounder, as if a coach had hit it to Ackley in the pregame warmups.  Way to go Mont-mi-go. The Ms did something different for them: rather than slagging their top 10 picks in order to afford just a couple of expensive bats (DJ and Wilson one year, Jackson and Morgan another) they took pitchers on Day One who should fit the slot if not come in a little lower, and then took a couple of teen arms on Day Two to give us several options at improving our pitching depth and talent level.  Seemed nice, especially since most of our better arms are hurt or underperforming. Maybe the non-hitting gloves can come a little cheaper than slot too and give us a little money for Day 3.  I wonder who... Read More

General Jack Z. has had a mixed bag this year.  At least in terms of the troops he sent to hit the beach. In his favor, he went out and got Cruz, Smith, Ruggiano and Weeks.  The Weeks signing was pretty redundant in light of getting Ruggiano, however.  I think we almost all agree that he complicated that issue by releasing the wrong guy, once he did release one. Cruz and Smith have been huge signings, as both have been VG-Ex bats. Where would we be without them?  Ruggiano was a decent bat, as well.  Weeks, not so much.  Z acquired Happ, as well.  Goodness knows that was a great move. So if... Read More
