Spring practices might have wrapped up on the gridiron for the Huskies football program, but the play on the other fields on Lake Washington are flying high nonetheless. On the diamond, both the baseball and softball programs have continued their stellar play, winning their respective series over the last weekend. Not only that, but both have players picking up individual accolades.
Starting with softball, the Huskies took two of three from the Oregon State Beavers on the road in Corvalis. All-world shortstop Ali Aguilar Washington take the rubber match in a big way, knocking two balls out of the park to bring her season total to a whopping 20. Aguilar leads the Pac-12 in home runs.
While Aguilar may be getting much of the national attention among the 10th-ranked Huskies, freshman pitcher Taran Alvelo won Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week thanks to her performances against Oregon State. In game 1 she notched 17 strikeouts over 17 innings pitched, including a career-high 11 strikeouts through 10 innings in the series opener. To finish the weekend she earned the complete-game win again, allowing just six hits and two runs while striking out six.
Back in Montlake, the UW baseball program hosted the St. Mary's Gaels for a four game set. After dropping the opening game, Lindsey Megg's men took three straight, capping the weekend with a shutout win 3-0. After giving up five runs in the opening loss, the Huskies turned in a stellar pitching effort the rest of the way, allowing only two runs total over the last three games.
The Gaels came into the series against the UW leading the WCC with a 22-15 record. Junior left hander Greg Miner didn't allow St. Mary's any opportunities to gain momentum in his start, throwing five scoreless innings, allowing four hits, one walk and striking out a batter to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Offensively, sophomore catcher Joey Morgan paced the Huskies, going 3-for-3 with a double in the finale.
Although the Huskies are not nationally ranked (yet), that doesn't mean they haven't been getting national attention. Washington senior Troy Rallings has been named to the 2016 National Pitcher of the Year Watch List as announced this week by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Huskies' closer is tied for second in the Pac-12 with nine saves so far this season, and surpassed Will Fenton for the 2nd all-time spot in UW career saves with 24 after picking up a pair against UCLA on April 16 and 17. Next season you can expect to see Rawlings with a big league organization. He was drafted in the 36th round by the Oakland A's in lasts year's draft and is expected to get more consideration this year as he has no more amateur eligibility remaining.
