T-Birds win first playoff game against Cougars

They had to go into overtime to do it, but the Seattle Thunderbirds beat the Prince George Cougars during the first round of WHL playoffs. It was a close game with a final score of 3-2.

No scoring occurred during the first period, with Seattle outshooting Prince George 12-9. Prince George was the first team to put any points on the board when Jesse Gabrielle made a power play, scoring a goal. Assists were made by Brad Morrison and Jansen Harkins. Donovan Neuls tied the game up 1-1 during the same period. Alexander True and Andreas Schumacher made the assists. True gave the T-Birds the lead during the third period when he scored a goal, assisted by Cavin Leth and Jared Hauf, but Prince George tied the game back up again when Jansen Harkins made a power play assisted by Jesse Gabrielle and Joseph Carvalho.

The game had to go into overtime, after which Andreas Schumacher made the game-winning shot. Alexander True and Caven Leth had the assists on the final goal of the night. Landon Bow had a good night on the ice, saving 21 saves on 23 shots. No penalties were had during overtime, but during the first period penalties were had by O’Brien and PG for holding, Eansor and Sea for hooking and Olsen and PG for cross-checking. The second period had penalties on Lakusta and PG for hooking, Hauf and Sea for interference, Harkins and PG for holding, and Ottenbreit and Sea for hooking. Third period penalties were on Harkins and PG for high-sticking, True and Sea for slashing and Hauf and Sea for hooking.

The next game will again be against Prince George and it will be one not to miss! It starts soon but you can still get tickets for the game from the Seattle Thunderbirds website or at the box office. That said, it may very well end up being a sold out game so get on it if you plan on going. It’s your last chance to see a home game before the third game takes us to Prince George on Tuesday and Wednesday. That said, if we do end up losing a game, the Birds will be taking on the Cougars at home again on Friday evening—but even then, if another game is necessary, the next will be at Prince George.
