In Seattle, the weather is hardly ideal for golfing day in and day out, but don't tell that to the Husky women's golf team. Heading into the third round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, the UW sits in second place as a team, led by senior Ling Yuo and freshman Julianne Alverez, who are tied for 19th on the leaderboard.
Senior Charlotte Thomas has also been pacing Washington, climbing 28 spots in the second round, entering the tournament's third round in 38th. In total, coach Mary Lou Mulfur has four golfers in the top 40, with freshman Sarah Rhee tied for 32nd after making par on nine of her first ten holes.
For the men, as a team they finished just short of making it out of their NCAA Regional at the Vanderbilt Club in Tennessee. Even more painful, they finished just one stroke shy of the second, which would have been the spot needed to advance. Despite being ranked no. 23, they finished behind no. 26 Virginia, who shot 22-under as a team.
Freshman Carl Yuan had the best finish for the Dawgs, ending the regional in fifth. Yuan went par in his final round and 10-under for the week, six shots back of the individual champion Michael Perras of Houston who ender up at 16-under.
Moving over to the diamond, the Husky softball program continues their dominance, advancing to the final of their NCAA Regional, which they are hosting at Husky Softball Stadium. Ranked 12th in the country, they rallied to defeat Minnesota 5-2. Now they will wait and face either Minnesota or North Dakota State Sunday at noon.
Sophomore Taylor Van Zee led the Huskies, going 3-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
Just down the way at Husky Ballpark, the Husky baseball team took another series, hosting the Stanford Cardinal this weekend. Already having won the first two games, they play the final game Sunday, which also happens to be senior day.
Trailing 3-1, the Huskies tied the game in the eigth, before winning it via a walk-off Sac fly from MJ Hubbs in the ninth. The win helps keep pace with the first-place Utah Utes, who they now sit just half-a-game behind in the Pac-12 standings.
Mid-week the Huskies face in-state rival Washington State before traveling to Utah for a three game set against the Utes. That series surely will decide the Pac-12 Conference Champion.
Washington baseball is ranked no. 17 in the country.
