Husky athletics roundup

As winter sports start up wrap up with the basketball teams starting their conference tournaments, softball and baseball charge into March and spring with the meat of their schedule awaiting. All around it was a week of highlights for the Husky athletic program, as many players were selected for individual honors.

Starting with men's hoops, as they gear up for the first round of their Pac-12 tournament against Stanford, four Huskies were selected for All-Pac-12 honors. Senior Andrew Andrews was selected for first team All-Pac-12, as he was the conference's leading scorer. Moreover, he was selected by the USBWA for their all-district team. The USBWA all-district team for district IX is selected from all players playing division I basketball within the states of Arizona, Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington regardless of conference.

Freshman Dejounte Murray was selected for the all- freshman first-team All-Pac-12 as well as the second-team All-Pac-12. Marquese Chriss mad honorable mention all-freshman All-Pac-12, and Malik Dime made honorable mention Pac-12 all-defensive team.

On the women's side, they lost to no. 8 Oregon State in the Pac-12 tournament in Seattle. They now await their fate for the NCAA Women's tournament selection show set to take place on Monday March, 14. Kelsey Plum and company should be included in the tourney field, with over 20 wins on their resume and getting to the semi-finals of the Pac-12 tournament, beating no. 13 Stanford along the way. ESPN has them projected as a 7 seed.

As this is International Women's Day, let's keep talking about the strong performances in Huskies women's athletics, shall we? Softball continued its elite production, going undefeated and winning the Husky Classic tournament. The star of the tournament without a doubt was junior shortstop Ali Aguilar, as she was named Pac-12 Player of the Week. Aguilar batted .556 (5-for-9) with four home runs, nine RBI and nine runs scored over the Huskies' four wins last weekend.

Running over to the men's diamond, the baseball program got off to a rocky start last weekend, with their home opener against Santa Clara getting rained out. The next day they played a double header in which they lost the first game before winning the second game on a walk-off single by junior outfielder Jack Meggs. Eventually the Dawgs won the series, capping the weekend with a 4-1 win over the Broncos Sunday.

Thus far it looks like Lindsey Megg's squad has picked up where they left off last year, winning two of the three series they have played thus far. The only one they didn't win they earned a split on the road against UC Riverside. Next up is a four game set against University of the Pacific in Seattle.
