Mariners Minor League Game Action Recap for May 29
First day at our new location and ... it's the end of civilization as we know it?... or not ... etc.

Here we are at SeattleSportsInsider.com.  Everybody good?  Good.  Tray tables in upright and locked position ... and ...

Oh ... my ... gosh ...!!

AAA -- Tacoma 25, Colorado Springs 6  -- Box

Pick your jaw up off the floor if you haven't seen that one yet, and let's cue John Denver:

The rebirth of Dustin Ackley?  Maybe baseball is fun again?  Maybe he likes the mountain air? Well, getting a home run and reaching base seven times in eight trips can't hurt: 5-for-6, HR, 2 walks.

And then there was suddenly-buzzworthy Abraham Almonte (26intheMix), who reached base seven times in seven trips on six singles and a walk.

Of course, Nate Tenbrink (26intheMix) deserves some love as well: 4-for-6, 2 doubles, HR, walk.  And Brad Miller (Talk40 #6) also had a homer and a double, not to mention six RBI.

Wait!  There's more ...

Jesus Montero was behind the plate after five straight starts at first.  His facemask isn't in the Goodwill pile yet.  He also had two hits and a walk.

And Franklin Gutierrez had two doubles and a walk.

Was there pitching?  Sure.  Andrew Carraway (Watch List): 6.0, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K.

The Sky Sox pitchers may be entering a witness-protection program, though.

AA -- Huntsville 6, Jackson 5  -- Box

If you're just joining us, you may not be aware that we carried water for Michael Saunders for a few years when (most) everyone else had given up, and, our new "project" is Vinnie Catricala (Talk40 #10), whom we "stubbornly" ranked ahead of Stefen Romero (Talk40 #11) in the face of ... well, pretty much everybody.

So, now we have a "Vinnie Vindication Watch" as he tries to crawl out of the big hole that he dug himself into.  Wednesday: 1-for-3, HR, 2 walks.

Vinnie's May: .329/.424/.482

Another one of our "favorites" is lefty starter Anthony Fernandez (Talk40 #23), who started the year on the DL and hasn't found the groove yet.  Wednesday: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.  Actually not a terrible outing, with only two XBH and one walk against six strikeouts, but still not anything like 2012.

High-A -- High Desert 5, Lake Elsinore 3 -- Box

Last year we designated Trevor Miller (26intheMix) as one of our "underrated" starters, but he's struggled to live up to the billing in the California League (which, of course, is tough on pitchers, period).

Wednesday night, however, was his third straight decent start, so maybe he's turning it around: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.

It may have helped that the Mavericks jumped out on top with a four-run 2nd inning, keyed by the fifth home run from Kevin Rivers.

Looking Ahead

Clinton was rained out yet again, so Dylan "Sharkie" Unsworth (26intheMix) and Victor Sanchez (Talk40 #12) are slated for a double-dip if the storms clear.  Roenis Elias (26intheMix), one of the bright spots of the season so far, is scheduled for Jackson.

Spec I enjoy these wrap ups and seems a great fit for SSI. I'll be reading either at your site or here!
