Former Minnesota Lynx favorite Monica Wright will finally get to start her first season with the Seattle Storm now that she is well. Between knee surgeries to other injuries, Wright has not been able to play a single with the team since she was acquired mid-season last year during a trade. She has missed a total of 37 games due to injuries, but Wright is excited to be back and ready to play. In fact, reports of Wright’s fierce attitude and ability to set the pace during training are pouring in, highlighting the fact that the woman is indeed a WNBA veteran and knows her job very well.
Wright said that she was glad to be healthy and very excited to be playing again. “I’m happy to be completely cleared by the doctors and able to participate in training camp. Just doing whatever the physical therapist and the doctor asked me to do,” she said. She also emphasized that she was ready and willing to do whatever it takes to get back in the game.
Seattle Storm Head Coach Jenny Boucek says that Wright is at a very critical career moment when injuries could make or break her entire career, but she has the kind of positive, never quit attitude that is not only ensuring that she continue to gain momentum instead of go downhill from now, but also that her teammates already respect her in such a short amount of time playing with her. Anyone who knows Wright and has followed her career knows that the dynamite athlete means business when she is on the court, so that comes as no surprise. But put Wright together with Bird, Loyd and Stewart, and Seattle has to be one unstoppable team this year.
“She put in a ton of work. So just seeing her, physically, starting to look like her old self, we’re all rejoicing with her. We know where she was at, and we know how hard she’s worked to get to this point,” Boucek said. Indeed, we are all rejoicing Wright’s return to not just the WNBA but specifically the Storm. With this much star power on the team, you have to wonder who is even going to start first during opening day. What do you think the lineup will look like and are you excited to see Wright back on the team and ready to roll with the Storm soon?
