Nothing new to the NFL, but a growing problem for the Seahawks each year, is the issue of retaining team superstars.

A new cap space increase passed also increased available funds across the league for players this off-season, which will only add to this issue. This is something we are seeing across the board already with a lot of tough decisions being made by teams. Visa versa a lot of players are choosing the open market over their teams.

The most recent Seahawk this is hitting is star DE Bruce Irvin. Another staple on defense, along with Michael Bennett, who is looking to get a deal done. Both are looking for the right price though, and at a time they could go get it from many teams across the NFL.

Irvin's road to Hawk success started with a chance GM John Schneider gave the then rookie in 2012. Prior to the draft, Irvin got in trouble for property destruction. Some teams looked past him and others would have too if Seattle, and Schneider, did not pull the trigger with the 15th pick in the first round.

The gesture was quite a gift considering the recent trouble Irvin had got himself into. Irvin must have appreciated the gift also, as he has been successful both off and on the field for the Seahawks.

Irvin's career stats include 132 solo tackles, 26 assist, 22 sacks, and 3 Interceptions. He has been very consistent with his play with no major drop-offs in any of the mentioned categories. Irvin has also been consistent with staying healthy and on the field, missing only 6 games in his 4 year career. 

One possible, if not probable,  team making a strong push for Irvin is the Jacksonville Jaguars. The move would make a lot of sense reuniting Irvin with Coach Gus Bradley. Bradley was influential in developing Irvin at the University of West Virginia and the two have a strong relationship because of this. 

At a time that the Hawks are working to extend coach Pete Carroll, this may only complicate matters for Irvin.

Atleast we can feel good about coach staying around. As the oldest coach in the league (although you wouldn't know it by looking at him) rumors were out that Carroll may retire after this upcoming season. 

To the players , however, extending the coaches contract...that still has a year on it... may not sit well with those whose contracts are up. Then again, the money available this year could quickly change their minds. 

For us Hawks fans, hopefully, Seattle can open up their pocket books to retain guys so influential in the team's success. Unfortunately, it does not feel like Irvin will be one of these guys.
