Pineda has spent a large portion of his career playing on loan to other teams. He started his senior career in 2002 with UNAM. He helped the Pumas win the Clausura and Apertura titles. He played there from 2002 to 2005. He made 63 appearances with the team, scoring one goal. In 2006, he was acquired by Guadalajara, where he played from 2006 to 2013. He played in 128 games during this period, scoring a total of five goals. It was during this time that he was loaned to numerous other organizations: San Luis in 2010, Cruz Azul from 2010 to 2011, Puebla from 2011 to 2012, and Queretaro from 2012 to 2013. He has been with the Seattle Sounders since 2014.

He has also played internationally for Mexico from 2004 to 2008. He played in the 2004 to 2015 World Cup Qualifiers and later appeared in the actual World Cup four times.

Since joining the Sounders, Pineda has played in 56 games. In those, he started 45 times. He scored a total of four goals and made nine assists. He played a total of 4078 minutes. He received one red card and 14 yellow cards. During the post season, he played three games during 2014. He did not play in 2015. He started in all three, playing for a total of 255 minutes. Pineda made no goals during those games.

The press has been at Pineda with negative reviews in 2015, citing his stats and continual presence in losing games as something that needs addressing during the next season. Many speculate that the midfielder should only finish games and not start them, as he tends to lose his energy throughout the game, which may cause errors.

Pineda has been playing as a domestic player in the United States since June 2015, when he obtained his green card. Fans of Pineda can find him on Twitter at @GONZOPINEDA8.
