Awesome to have Wright in Seattle!
Today’s player was born in San Antonio, Texas on July 15, 1988. She is an American basketball player and stands at 5’10 tall. Monica Wright is a guard for the Seattle Storm. She weighs 178 pounds and wears the number 22 jersey. Her basketball career began at Forest Park, her high school in Woodbridge, Virginia. Wright was ranked the number two guard in the country while playing for the team, winning the Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year award. She was also the 11th player overall in national ranks.
In college, Wright played as a Cavalier for the University of Virginia. She earned several awards and honors while playing for the team. Some of those included ACC Rookie of the Year, National Defensive Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year. She was the top scorer in the league, making both the All-ACC defensive team and the All-ACC first team. Wright’s field goal percentage with Virginia was 43.6 and she scored 2540 points in the 133 games she played in college.
Write then played for the Minnesota Lynx when she was drafted during the 2010 WNBA Draft. During the first round, she was the second overall draft pick that year, making her a highly coveted player. She was also selected as part of the WNBA's all-rookie team. She played for the Lynx from 2010 to 2015, winning WBCA NCAA Division I Defensive Player of the Year in 2010. From 2011 to 2012, she also played for Botas SK. From 2012 to 2013, Wright also played as a member of the Dandenong Rangers. In 2013, she achieved second place in the 2013 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year. From 2013 to the current year, she’s also played for Bucheon KEB-Hanabank. In 2007, Wright won a gold medal with the USA’s Women U19 team in Slovakia. The Storm is happy to have this two-time WNBA Champion on the team.
The Storm acquired Wright on July 20, 2015 during a trade for player Renee Montgomery. Seattle Storm President and GM Alisha Valavanis highly praised Wright during the trade, saying, “We took advantage of this unique opportunity to bring in a player with great athleticism and significant championship experience.” She went on to say that the team is very excited about having Wright in Seattle. Wright’s career averages include 7.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.
