It's the middle of May, which means college athletes are cramming for finals if they haven't taken them already. With the end of the term also means the end of the spring sports season, and thus the 2015-16 collegiate athletic year.
Several Husky spring sports programs have already started their postseason runs. The no. 23 Husky Golf squad heads into the NCAA Regionals at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. led by freshman Carl Yuan, who shot a bogey free first round of 7-under 5. Thanks in large part to Yuan's performance, the Huskies are tied for third after shooting a collective 5-under 283 in the opening round. Yuan is currently only one stroke off the lead, and sits in second place. No. 2 ranked Texas and East Carolina stand in the Dawgs' way in team play.
The University of Washington has the privilege this year of hosting the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships, and Husky athletes are not disappointing. Behind six individual championships over the weekend the Husky program tied the school record for most individual track and field championships at the Pac-12 championships. Not bad for hosting the event for the first time.
Distance runners Izaic Yorks and Colby Gilbert captured the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter titles, respectively, and junior Elizabeth Quick added another Pac-12 women’s pole vault title on Saturday. While Aaron Nelson (3,000m steeplechase), Katie Knight (10,000m), and Jax Thoirs (pole vault), also brought some hardware to Montlake. With his 1,500 meter victory, Yorks becomes the sixth runner ever to win back-to-back Pac-1championships in the 1,500, running the third-fastest time since 1980 in the process.
Moving over to the diamond the Husky softball team enters the NCAA regionals as the 11th overall seed, facing Weber State May 20 at Husky Softball Stadium. This is the 23rd consecutive year the Huskies have made the NCAA Softball Tournament.
The Huskies are coming into the tournament hot, having ended their season on the highest of notes sweeping a three game set from Stanford in Palo Alto. They end their season with an overall record of 36-13, going 16-8 in Pac-12 play.
UW baseball ended their season against in-state rival Washington State last weekend, however they dropped the first two games of the three game series to the last place Cougs, and thus failed to overtake Utah for first-place in the Pac-12. They do have a a three game set coming up versus ninth place Stanford, before playing WSU one more time and closing out the season on the road against Utah. Washington is ranked no. 23 in the country and need to finish out strong to secure a high enough seed to make their road to their first College World Series that much easier.
