The Seattle SuperSonics have been missed, to say the least, since the team left in 08 to Oklahoma City.
Founded in 1967, the Sonics played in three different divisions while in the NBA. Beginning with the Western Conference from 67-70 before switching to the Pacific division until 2004. They then ended in the Northwest division until leaving in 08.
The team also had several home stadiums during their reign. This included two stays in Key Arena, 8 years in the kingdome, and 94-95 in the Tacoma Dome. Home games were played at KeyArena, originally known as Seattle Center Coliseum, for 33 of the franchise's 41 seasons in Seattle. In 78, the team moved to the Kingdome. They returned to the Coliseum full-time in 1985, moving temporarily to the Tacoma Dome while the Coliseum was renovated and rebranded as KeyArena.
The team's history began on December 20, 1966, LA businessmen Sam Shulman and a group of partners were awarded an NBA franchise in Seattle. Schulman served as head of team operations, and named the SuperSonics after a Boeing contract, which was later cancelled. The SuperSonics were Seattle's first major league sports franchise.
The teams color scheme was chosen as green, yellow, and white. Something that stuck through many of their years remaining unchanged. That is until 1995, when the team added red and orange while eliminating yellow. This included a new Sonics logo as well.Their first uniforms used Sonic's in the same font as the Cincinnati Royals...now the Sacramento Kings.
Leading those colors and jerseys into battle was Squatch (a derivation of sasquatch). He was the was the team mascot between his 1993 debut until team's relocation in 2008.
In 2007, a rock band even wrote a song about the mascot, and that same year, Squatch attempted to set a record with a jump of 30 feet on skates over vehicles owned by NBA players.
Following the SuperSonics' move to Oklahoma City, the character was retired, and remains part of the intellectual property (name, colors, etc.) that the city of Seattle retained as part of the Key Arena lease settlement. The character's performer from 1999–2008 (Marc Taylor) is now the Oklahoma City Thunder mascot.
Beginning play in October 1967, the expansion team stumbled with a 144–116 loss in their first game, and finished the season with juat a 23–59 record.
The team did have a fair share of success eventually however. This included a Championship in 1979 and won conference titles in 1978, 79, and 96. The Sinics also won 6 division titles including a three-peat in 96-98. Those yes are affectionately known as the Payton Kemp era... A period of time with the two players dominatung headlines aside from Michael Jordan.
One day, the Sonic's will return with a beautiful new facility to try and get back to the promise land as they did in 1979. In 2011 a push came to get seattke back, butbkanded short. A couoke years kater...yet again. It will happen sooner or later...hopefully sooner. Until that time, enjoy this article and relive the past.
