Week 2 of the Champions League group stage completed this week, and Spain again showed it quality against some of the biggest international clubs in the world. The English Premier League may get a lot of adulation as the best soccer league on the planet, and for good reason. Any given match a team the stature of Manchester United or Chelsea can lose to the likes of a Swansea or Crystal Palace.
However when it comes to European play, the true cream of the crop lies in the Iberian Peninsula, Spain to be exact. Europa League or Champions League, Spanish teams are proving to be the class of Europe. And now where was that more apparent than this week in Champions League play.
Other than Real Madrid, all the La Liga teams came away from three points. Atlético Madrid came away from arguably the most impressive win, beating a Bayern Munich coached by Carlo Ancelotti, somewhat avenging their loss to Ancelotti when he was manager of Real Madrid. Of course that loss stung Diego Simeone quite hard, as it came in the Champions League final two years ago.
Atleti had a familiar hero step up to put them ahead with the winning goal for the 1-0 victory at home. Bayern must have had flashbacks as Belgium international Yannick Carrasco fired one home in the about the 55th minute. Carrasco of course ended Bayern's Champions League final dreams not even a barely even five months ago as he scored the winning goal to eliminate the then Pep Guardiola coached Bayern from last season's Champions League semifinals.
Barcelona defeated Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 with goals from Arda Turan and Gerard Pique. The win puts them alone in first place of their group, two points ahead of Manchester City and their former manager, Guardiola.
Real Madrid continued their run of mixed results. They've now drawn three matches in a row, domestic and European. Despite Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his 95th goal in Champions League play, Borussia Dortmund's Andre Schurrle pulled even at two a piece barely even three minutes before full time.
Their domestic league match ended in a similar fashion last weekend, only in front of the home Bernabeu crowd. Dortmund has given them trouble in European play in the past. With Dortmund taking three points both times they played in 2012-2013.
Madrid better bounce back fast as if they continue on their recent run, they could lose their lead in La Liga as well.
