SuperDraft Final Selection
Welcome, Michael Nelson

The Seattle Sounders announced their final MLS SuperDraft pick on Tuesday. Their number 15 pick during the fourth round was Michael Nelson. Nelson, a defender, remains unsigned as of yet. Nelson was born on August 8, 1984, making him 21 years old. He hails from Austin, Texas. He stands at 6’1 and weighs 170 pounds.

In his senior year in 2015, Nelson attended Old Dominion and was named a First Team All-Conference USA selection. He transferred there and played for the Monarchs after spending his freshman year at N.C. State. In high school, he was a four-year team captain and named 2011 RISE First Team All-American.

Luckily for Seattle fans, Old Dominion Athletes had the chance to sit down with Nelson and get to know him. Nelson was charming as he told ODA about how he was anxiously waiting the last day of the drafts, refreshing his computer to check the Draft Tracker page and becoming even more nervous when the page would not load for him.

Nelson says that he’s never been to Seattle, so fans will want to give him an extra warm welcome! He thinks he will fit right at home there, however. He says that he is very excited to play for the Sounders. “They are one of the most respected franchises in the league. They have a very good organization and very good ownership. They’re a great team with great players,” he said. He then cited Clint Dempsey, Obafemi Martins and Brad Evans as players to look up to. He also told ODA that it has always been his dream to play professional soccer, and that the Sounders are making that dream come true.

Fans who want to keep up with Nelson as he joins the Sounders can find him on Twitter. His handle is @MichaelNelson94. Nelson shares videos, photos and all of his recent news, making the feed a great place to really get to know him. His feed is currently filled with congratulations messages from family and friends, depicting a support team that looks quite caring and invested in Nelson. Nelson, the son of Tony and Marie Nelson, has one sibling, a brother named Wes. Nelson also volunteers at a local food bank, so he will fit in well with the service spirit we associate with the team.

What do you think of the Sounders latest edition to the team? Will Nelson find a good spot among Rave Green? Chime in below with your thoughts.
