Seattle Sounders fans are eagerly awaiting meeting the new blood on the team from this year’s MLS Superdraft, and we have had some announcements this week featuring new players—but for at least one Superdraft pick, the Sounders decided to do something a little different. The team gave Chicago Fire not only a draft pick but also some allocation funds in order to acquire the team’s left back Joevin Jones. The amount of money, per usual, was not announced to the public. The sounders will now have two players with the last name Jones, making things more interesting during announcements.

Jones was born in Carenage, Trinidad & Tobago on August 3, 1991. He is 5’11 and weighs 160 pounds. Fans should take note that his name is pronounced JO VIN. Jones has played 28 games with Chicago Fire. He started in 26 of those, playing a total of 2,257 minutes on the field. He made one goal with the team as well as one assist. Prior to Chicago Fire, Jones had four years of experience with Trinidad club W Connection. He played internationally on a loan with Finnish side HJK Helsinki in 2014 as well. Jones attended the Mucurapo Senior Comprehensive in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Jones has participated in the 2011 Pan American Games, 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey says that Rave Green is very excited to have Jones on the team. “Making our roster younger and faster has been a priority for the club this offseason, and acquiring a player like Joevin fits that bill,” he said. Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid confirmed that Jones is a quick player and said that he looks forward to having his versatile skill set on the Sounders team this season. He also complimented the player on his skills with Chicago Fire last season. Schmid says that he’s a natural lefty who can play anywhere on the field and has demonstrated his skill on the international Trinidad & Tobago team as well.

Jones is the son of Kelvin and Merlin Jones. He has two siblings, brothers Marvin and Alvin. Jones comes from a family of soccer players; in fact, his father even played as a defender of Trinidad & Tobago national team.
