Unbelievably well thought out. What a powerful combination for Felix. Friendly, never in a million years would I of captured that part of who he is as a defining characteristic of his on field persona but it is who he is. I like loyalty and believe that it is important but pales in comparison to the concept of being friendly. Musial was pretty much retired when I was born but his popularity in St. Louis was as strong in 2013 as is was in 1963 because he was a great player but more than that he was the nicest guy you'll ever come across.
It's not surprising that Felix doesn't blast his teammates after a game where they don't score any runs (again) because that is not who he is. His parents must truely be great people as well.

"Brand" is a business term that is often used cynically; Felix is authentic. But we've been reading a little too much Euro soccer and it's rubbing off. Whatever headline works, man.

Hallmark has an image: "When you care enough to send the very best." You buy Hallmark, you're showing refined taste! And you're taking care of your loved ones.
It doesn't matter whether you agree with Hallmark's image logically. "Branding" is the sum of impressions you have about a company BEFORE you start THINKING about that company.
For a person this is reputation. You have a certain impression of Rush Limbaugh, and chances are that you've never heard his radio show. Reputation, and Brand, creates a series of advantages or disadvantages for you before you even shake hands and say hello.

Apple's brand focuses on emotion, on the right side of the brain. Whether you agree with them logically or not, you probably think of Apple as innovative, as helping people achieve their dreams, as moving them into space-age lifestyles ... when you look at an Apple store you probably feel things that relate to freedom, passion, and aspirations.
Coca-Cola is currently focusing on friends, family, and diverse contexts. They show polar bears drinking Coke because they want you to think of Coke as something that you have in common with friends, wherever you are.

Felix' reputation, or "brand," includes Loyalty if you ask me. "Brand Essence" deals in three (3) words -- two adjectives and a noun.
- Nike = Authentic Athletic Performance (built with the "Just Do It" tagline)
- Disney = Fun Family Entertainment
- Starbucks = Rewarding Everyday Moments
- Seattle Mariners = Nice Night Outdoors (and that's accurate)
- New York Yankees = Pride, Tradition and Glory (that's accurate, too)
- Seattle Sports Insider = ... taking suggestions ;- ) anybody want to make a list of Brand Essences for all the local blogs?!
There is entertainment that isn't for families. Disney wants to cause you to think of a certain kind of entertainment ... and when you invert that, when you WANT fun for the family, they want that to cause you to think of Disney.
Starbucks focuses on the term "everyday." Guess why. So they build their stores around causing you to associate them with everyday things.

Loyalty is defining with Felix. What else?
To me his pitching is not intimidating; he doesn't hit people, doesn't glower, etc. He's not even all that powerful on the mound; he doesn't throw particularly hard. (Shaq was asked about his brand. "My image is POWER," Shaq said.)
To me, Felix' pitching is dominating. Even Randy Johnson had guys who could hit him -- and times when he seemed to be coming apart on the mound. But Felix never seems to have the disadvantage, not in one at-bat all season long.
Domination speaks to complete control of a situation. We don't mean domination in the cliche'd sports sense. We mean it in the dictionary sense.
He actually does have a "King Felix" brand and it's not about a regal bearing. It was a throwaway nickname by a local blog, not particularly thought out that I know of. It caught on. But where it has traction, is in the idea that Felix reigns over the stadium, that he pitches authoritatively, and that he is second to nobody.

For me, Felix' other defining attribute is friendliness. FRIEND: that's another word that any 3-year-old understands and that no 40-year-old can define.
And it sounds weird, I realize, but it captures who Felix really is. Felix doesn't hate his enemies; he plays ball with his friends. It's part of what is odd about Felix, what is unique about him. You don't really think in terms of seeking out friendly players. But that's what Cal Ripken was, what Stan Musial was, what Willie Mays was. Junior was a friendly player.
You don't seek them out. But then, Felix has certain attributes that aren't really competitive advantages. They are still part of his personality, part of the fabric of a game in which he performs.
Jack Zduriencik said, in the press conference, that they did this contract for the kids. Think about it. Why do you and I, as sabermigos, have first place in that line?

There aren't a lot of us, but we're diversely represented in age, occupation, and opinion. Doc stands as the bartender, offering up his opinions of the day and happy to converse with the patrons.)
I think they've got 10 times the traffic that we or Prospect Insider do. Jeff is definitely pretty hip and phenomenally witty. Not sure his comic talent doesn't approach that of some of the great standup comedians. ... many of his commenters are also pretty funny to read sometimes.

... Loyal and Friendly as compared to the armies of any other superpower in world history. No other army has ever shown the same kind of concern over collateral damage and over the welfare of "enemy" civilians.
The U.S. attitude has affected the attitudes of other armies too; imagine if U.S. military power, since the 1950's, had been wielded in a North Korean style, and imagine how other armies would be behaving in response.
Seemed odd, reading over the site today, how Felix' brand is similar to that of our Army, and we hadn't caught the fact...

Friendliness, a hospitable environment for diverse posters, has been a goal, but I wonder whether your "Openness" ideal trumps that. Openness seems to capture the idea of freedom.
Not that we're going to be selling stock in our "Brand" :- ) but it's an interesting intellectual exercise. Every blog would do well to be AWARE OF its 3-word brand essence.

As to "Intelligent" ... hm. That touches on the goal too ... "adult" is sort of the way I thought about it but "adult" doesn't capture it either; neither does "mature" capture the goal. Respectful? That doesn't capture the goal of being fresh and stimulating to a literate audience ... is there a word that anybody has here? Maybe "thoughtful" actually is the goal. Never thought (heh) of it that way.
Freedom, idea exchange, respect, those ideals are pretty close to what we've been aiming for. Without posters who appreciate those goals, we'd lose the most important one - idea EXCHANGE.
as an author are the most open to commentors of any blogger I've ever read. No other author seems a willing to defend their ideas, or as accepting to challenges our modifications.
You'll noticed I used some moniker of intelligent in every brand, because I believe that the Seattle blogosphere is very intelligent. But SSI is a unique blend of sabermetric stats (both common and personally invented), scouting, and outsider opinion, and that blend deserves to be called intelligent. Thank you for creating this community, Jeff.
I like supplanting dominance with king just as much, but can't think of better. I think king implies that he has the power to do what he wants which makes friendly and loyal seem stronger and more rare a combination. The same holds true for dominance though, really.

That one word for SSI...Bloodless? Civil thoughtful discourse. Civil seems like the best word for that. I love Merks suggestion of thoughtful in that the double meaning applies fully. Discourse implies that there is a theme of conversation, which is sports although most often baseball.
I don't have any better ideas for the others than have already been said.

For SSI, I'd say that its defining characteristics for me are "The Other Side of the Argument" or "Thoughts you won't find anywhere else"...you are a sort of counter-culture blogger...you seem to have the most fun when you are arguing against some conventional wisdom that you think is being incorrectly applied or over-exposed.
I would also say that SSI is inclusive. Cameron's blog is distinctly imperial and exclusive. He rules with an iron fist - opinions he doesn't like are shouted down and then the posters are blocked. His posts are filled with an aggressive, hyper-intellectual superiority that I find grating, but none can deny that they have a lot of good ideas and make good points frequently. LL is cliquish. They try to be inviting and hip, but they are hip in the same way that Bratz dolls are hip...you have to be one of the cool kidz to be liked over there.
SSI is my home because I dislike cliques, I tend to get myself into bad arguments when I run into aggressive, territorial type-A personalities that don't handle alternative ideas well (because I have trouble backing down when the fight is no longer productive) and because...well...SSI is the only place inclusive and friendly enough to tolerate me.
I go to a gym called Planet Fitness. Their slogan is "You Belong" or "The Judgment Free Zone" - that seems to apply to Doc and his blog. He really passionately believes that there is a place in this world for everyone...that we all belong and have something valuable to contribute. I am finding out as I get older that I need people like that in my life.
So my suggestion for SSI's slogan/brand name is simple:
"Seattle Sports Insider: No Matter Your Ideas, There's a Home for them Here"
As for King Felix...moshing off the idea that his character is very similar to that of a well-trained Army General: Dominant, Friendly, Loyal, Passionate, Patriotic (to Venezuela and to Mariner Nation), Civil, Fair and Strong...
