A winner either way.
It’s come down to two goals now for the Seattle Sounders 2015 Goal of the Year. The final two goals were scored by Obafemi Martins… and Obafemi Martins! Not much of a drum roll there when either way, Martins wins. But let’s take a look at both goals. Then you can post below to say which goal you think should win.
The first goal scored was versus Houston Dynamo. The pirouette that Martins completed before scoring was pretty amazing to behold. Let’s face it: a lot of us would fall on our faces attempting a similar move! Fans lost their minds watching that incredible move, ending in three goals in three games, and they cheered even more wildly when Martins gave in to the passion of the moment and flipped not once, but twice, further demonstrating his athleticism and energy.
The second goal nominated occurred during a game versus the Colorado Rapids, and this one is the goal many are predicting will win. Announcers demanded to know who else in MLS could do what Martins was able to do when he skillfully maneuvered the ball between two Rapids players, catching the pass with his foot and, with an elegant pirouette, nailing into the net. It was almost like a dance, and while it wasn’t as physical as the first goal nominated, it was definitely more adroitly pulled off due to the nature of the spin and how fast Martins had to be to pull it off. A second earlier or later would have yielded disastrous results. After that goal, he didn’t do any flips, but he made the most victorious face in the league before his teammates embraced him (and after Rapids players shoved him right before making the goal!).
Martins himself has said it before when he played internationally: he shows up to score goals. Competitions like this one prove that he is not only a huge fan favorite, but a player who walks his talk when it comes to his goals. Martins sets out and does what he says he will do, but he also does it with his own unique panache that makes the crowd go wild.
Voting ends tomorrow night, December 17, at 11:15 PM so be sure to get your votes in if you haven’t already. Either way, Obafemi Martins gets the glory, but you get to help decide for exactly which goal he will receive the honors.
