Don't get me wrong...I am grateful for whatever time you want to spend as our hitting coach, but...I still hope you aren't heading out...the team needs you. :D

Mariners announce a 2:30 pm PT press conference at Safeco tomorrow with team president Kevin Mather and hitting coach Edgar Martinez.
----------------
Hope everything's all right and he's not retiring. If they want to retire his number before he gets in the Hall, that would be great. He's already got an award and a street named after him.
.
And a cantina. Which is the senior award, your number retired or your name in 4' neon letters, the first thing you see from home plate? LOL.
They introduce Edgar to you on the street outside, remind you of him as you settle into your seat ... your eyes ratchet down to the top rail of the dugout, boom. Nothing actually on the field in fair play, though. Press conference may be to announce a 30' bobblehead about where the Astros' CF pole is. Hey, man, the Yankees may have a few retired numbers but we're in this thing too.
Edgar is a franchise talisman to be proud of. No doubts there. Pretty rare for any player to go 20 years in one uniform, quite apart from being a pleasure to have in class. Or maybe those two things correlate? In any case, Edgar is slotted WAY below his pay grade as our hitting coach. If we get another year of his GQ-able face in our dugout it's all gravy.
But obviously the Mariners won't have some Ben Gamel type wearing #11 in spring training. Let's hope for the number thingy. If it isn't an assistant GM appointment ... that pleasure to have in class bit, weighing heavily ... or maybe Trump naming an Ambassador to Puerto Rico. Any word on whether Kellyanne Conway will be at the press conference?

...it's something ceremonial.
One of the few guys I've ever seen who I think produced better hitting virtually for an entire team.
Another step on the road to the Hall.
Two things to remember:
--If voters consider Ortiz worthy, they have no choice but to get Edgar in first
--not that it's nearly the same thing, but the NFL Hall of Fame has enshrined a punter.
A punter.
"If voters consider Ortiz worthy, they have no choice but to get Edgar in first"
Ortiz played nearly his whole career for the Boston Red Sox. Edgar for the Mariners. Ortiz WILL make it for sure because he played for an ESPN darling team. Edgar MIGHT make it, but if he doesn't it will be because he DIDN'T play for an ESPN darling team. You know and I know that these choices are not made objectively. If nothing else it's an issue of exposure, not that Gar didn't get some exposure, it just wasn't as big as Ortiz.
