I know what the ERA says, but he is about to splat on the MLB windshield like a bug. The walk rate will skyrocket once they realize he can't torch them consistently with the slider because he can't throw it for strikes.
When I worked for the Yankees, they tracked the average distance between where the catcher set his glove for a pitch and where he caught it. The Steve Cishek that has less of a command problem was fourth worst in baseball among relievers. He's much...MUCH worse today. I'd wager he's missing the glove by an average of 15 inches (that's...virtually the entire plate) because back then, he missed by 12"+
I hated...hated...HATED when he came in in a close game. He's going to die like a dog in Tampa.
.
Q. Does he start or reieve?
A. Dipoto liked his "versatility," which was what Dipoto said about Phelps. Though Phelps' ability to start games is off the table this year.
Also the Gray rumors were held to be "nonsense" from the beginning, so you Kyle Lewis sighs can breathe a sigh of heavy relief. We seem to have 2-to-make-1 from Marc-O and Erasm-O. Dr. D could think of a whale of a lot worse.
.
Q. Where has Erasmo been these last three years in Tampa? Has he evolved?
A. When he left, his arsenal was:
√ 92-93 straight fastball, thrown into a teacup, Maddux-like mechanics, super still head
√ Plus 82 MPH straight change was best weapon
√ dubious 83 slider was okay if kept on the black
Most SSI Denizens liked Erasmo; the Pencil hated him with a fiery passion. As far as we can tell, this Erasmo is pretty much the same 7 K, 2.5, 1.2 HR pitcher who needs merely to keep those low-release straight fastballs out of the middle-middle to win games.
.
Q. What were his results with Tampa? Not as big a park as Safeco, huh.
A.
2015 = 11-6, 3.75 with a 7.0 / 2.2 / 0.9 slash line
2016 = 7-11, 3.77 with a 6.3 / 2.6 / 1.4 slash
2017 = 4-3, 4.80 (4.13 xFIP) with a 7.1 / 2.1 / 1.3 slash
Like we sez, he does need to keep the fatball out of the little basketball area waist high.
....
I don't see where he started any games at all in 2016-17, probably due to the Rays' use of Archer, Odorizzi, Smyly, Matt Moore, Matt Andriese, and Blake Snell. This year Alex Cobb and Jake Faria have been on big rolls. In 2015 a quick glance (check me on this) seems to show 14 good starts and 3 bad ones.
.
Q. What do the Rays fans think?
A. Surprised, loss of a "beloved" pitcher, can pitch well out of a rotation, is the Ben Zobrist of pitchers. ... The 5-hour Boston game left me feeling like Steve Cishek was decidedly redundant and if this is the Erasmo we traded, I give the deal five corn cobs out of five at Ye Ol Crab Shack. Apparently Jerry Dipoto is no longer beholden to Lloyd McClendon grudges. (Well, not grudges ... misjudgments? Tactical errors? Unhappy circumstances? In any case Dr. D loves Re-Do's.
.
A recent Video gives us a 93 MPH teacup fastball at the knees to end an inning. Erasmo's verve and panache is up a bit, a little more "ooomph" in the acceleration.
Here is a YouTube. April 2017 vs. the Tigers. Think I'll start using that rather than MLB.com?
√ 94 lo-away FB swung on and miss
√ 84 deadfish change to LH for strike three
√ Ladder fastball swung thru
√ 91 paintball vs LH, park holds it (so might Jar-Rod)
√ Fastball inner third, ties batter up
... we might almost hope that three years in Tampa have put some seasoning and pitchability on the lad. I'm pretty stoked! :- ) To get him into a big park that will forgive a few of the fly balls. Now if our #5 were simply Marc-O and let's hope, that would be one thing, but a 2-for-1 one draw between Marco and a career solid-average SP? For the #5 slot? Yes please. I LIKE it.

Is it me or are the M's now pretty stacked with #4 and #5 BOR types though? Feels like we have one ace and a school of bottom feeders in Felix (sorry), Miranda, Moore, Gonzalez, Gallardo and now Ramirez, plus the plentiful #6 and #7's in Tacoma. Love the depth we have now and all, but it's going to take another TOR to get it done for me and I don't think we'll get it unless the plan is to trade from the bottom or wait for next years FA class. Love the move, just feels like classic Mariner not quite enough. I'll still never count Dipoto out and love his overall process...I'm hungry though, give me more.
First pitcher we claimed made me Smyly
But the timetable turned out so vilely
A ligament must heal
From its woe into weal
So the upgrade came off not-so-slyly
Now the next to enlist was Dave Phelps
Grimly greeted by grimace and yelps
Tis’ a starter to be?
To the bullpen goes he.
Leaves me wond’rin’ if indeed this move helps.
Then the third to the mound was Gonzales
His changeup is mostly there all is
Lighting up triple-A!
Will his stuff upward play?
When soon to the big league the call is
Then today we reclaim sir Erasmo
Hoping that he’s acquired the surpass throw
Flinging bb’s in threes
Throwing K’s at the knees
Have we found our messiah? Alas no.
Love the format; keep 'em coming!
The most impressive thing was finding a set of rhyms for Erasmo. :D
we gave up a struggling RP and got something with starter type upside.
fleeced them!!
Erasmo is a decent enough #4,5 I like him better than some of the depth guys. He is arby through 2019. He averages 92 but can puch it up to 94 and he does have the good control with it. One of the weaknesses I remember was that he is short and the 94 plays a little less than the big tall pitcher gets from it. He helps the team just not enough. This moved raised the floors vs stacking the deck pushing all but Paxton down a slot is what was and is needed. Maybe the M's can Get Shohie Otani or Darvish. I thought the M's could have drawn out Verlander from Detroit because I have seen reports claiming the Tigers don't want to cover any major portion of his contract and the M's taking on salary deal seemed like a link.
my .02$
DeGrom had a fastball slip on him and Haniger was hit in the lip/chin/nose and left the game immediately.
He has so desperately needed, under less than desirable circumstances. Maybe this time when he comes back he'll get back to the player we know he can be (see April 2017 statistics).
