Have the M's ever had a star player with the leadership and personality qualities of Mr. 240? Not Griffey, Edgar (quiet example), ARod (ha), RJ (pitchers don't count...and anyway no). You can just see the whole team kind of orbits around him. Plus as evidenced by many player quotes, he actively helps the other guys with tactical advice at the plate. A lot of stars don't do that sort of thing.
Just think about the example it sets when the $240M guy is in his first year of an uber mega deal, not hitting HR the way he always has, and yet is completely calm and satisfied hitting the pitches he gets for singles and winning a batting title* instead. I mean, can Ackley really continue to be greedy for HR when Robinson Cano is not?
Absolutely worth far more than $24M this year. We can worry about year 10 when we're done hanging the WS banners :)
