I do expect Almonte to head to Tacoma in the next day or two. And it may well be Z's call. It has to happen. But TWO sea changes are a tough thing, so i don't expect us to see Montero for a while. Baker touches on that subject today, as a matter of fact. "I think we might see Abraham Almonte optioned to Tacoma in the next day or two. McClendon know it's time to make the move. But there is also some reticence because the staff believes that Michael Saunders isn't an every day center field from a defensive perspective. They prefer to have him in the corner outfield spots. UZR had him as a -9.7 center fielder last season."
Actually it has him as a -19.7, but that also ignores the too shallow positioning issue as he was considerably better than that prior to '13.
And I would offer that so far there isn't much to show that Almonte is a 1st rate MLB CF, either.
Doc, I"m with you as to (lefty) Smoak in the #2 spot. I've thought so for a bit. The biggest skill he brings is his ability to walk. He's not a boomer, so let's not treat him as one.
