If you want to unroster your rule V guy, you're allowed to essentially buy his contract from the return team...usually this involves cash considerations or a PTBNL. The caveat is...you have to FIRST offer him back to the return team and THEN ask if they want to let you buy him back. They obviously have to agree to this.
